The Pittsburgh Steelers are going through injury troubles as they enter
their second week of training camp at Saint Vincent College.
It was a great start for the Steelers, as rookies were
impressing, the team was joking, and training camp was a friendly and fun as it
could be. But like always, there’s a point where going from no contact to
playing football causes problems.
After losing Ramon Foster for 4-5 weeks to a knee injury on
Saturday, the team faced a number of losses on Sunday.
Outside linebacker, T.J. Watt (hamstring), free safety Sean
Davis (groin), tight end Vance McDonald (foot), wide receiver JuJu
Smith-Schuster (undisclosed) and undrafted rookie linebacker Ola Adeniyi
(undisclosed), all left practice Sunday.
This the price many teams pay this time of the year. With
lighter work in OTAs and minicamp, training camp brings the first full football
experience to the field. After six months of training without full contact,
many players’ bodies need time to adjust, causing early injuries.
The Steelers are down a number of guys, as they also lost
Morgan Burnett to a hamstring injury. He’s yet to hit the field during training
camp, leaving plenty of opportunity for rookie Terrell Edmunds.
With no further details on the Steelers’ list of injuries,
expect some new faces in first-team reps during Week 2. Mike Tomlin was unable
to give much on the situation, telling media
he is unaware of the level of these injuries.
Assuming none of these injuries are long-term, the Steelers
should begin to see these players back on the field by the end of the week, or
beginning of next week. With only ten days remaining before the team’s first
playoff game, they’ll hope to have all of these young players ready to go for
their first exhibition game of the year.
