NL CENTRAL NEWS AND NOTES

PITTSBURGH PIRATES
Right-hander Chris Archer had a rocky debut with the Pirates, but the PNC Park fans were so excited about the two-time All-Star coming to Pittsburgh in a trade that they still gave him a standing ovation.
The Pirates overcame a rough outing by Archer, acquired from the Rays for right-hander Tyler Glasnow and rookie outfielder Austin Meadows, to beat the Cardinals 7-6. Archer gave up five runs (four earned), seven hits and four walks in 4 1 / 3 innings.
The Pirates also acquired shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria from the Rays on Aug. 6.
CHICAGO CUBS
Yu Darvish finally has some reason for optimism.
The right-hander came through a 55-pitch bullpen session Aug. 4 saying he was pain free. He has not pitched since May 20 because of an impingement in his right shoulder.
Darvish said he began to feel better after he started getting treatment on his back in late July.
Reliever Brandon Kintzler made three scoreless appearances after being acquired from the Nationals in a trade for a minor-league pitcher.
CINCINNATI REDS
The Reds had next season in mind when they traded outfielder Adam Duvall.
The deal with the Braves opened full-time corner outfielder roles for Jesse Winker and Scott Schebler in 2019. In return for Duvall, the Reds got outfielder Preston Tucker, who had 117 at-bats with the Braves this season, and righthander Lucas Sims and Matt Wisler, who were assigned to Class AAA Louisville (Kentucky) but could be part of Cincinnati’s pitching staff next year.
Winker hit .299 with seven home runs in 89 games before having surgery to repair a separated right shoulder. Schebler was batting .278 with 12 homers through 76 games but might be sidelined until September because of a sprained right shoulder.
Tucker got immediate playing time because of the outfielders’ injuries but went 2-for-13 in his first four games with Cincinnati. He played in 98 games for the Astros as a rookie in 2015 but spent all of last season in Class AAA.
MILWAUKEE BREWERS
The Brewers were able to add a pitcher after the non-waiver trade deadline.
Right-hander Jordan Lyles was claimed off waivers from the Padres on Aug. 5. The 27- year-old was 2-4 with a 4.29 ERA in 24 games this season, including eight starts.
The Brewers needed another starter when left-hander Brent Suter was lost to Tommy John elbow surgery.
Second baseman Jonathan Schoop got off to a slow start with the Brewers, going 2for-21 with 10 strikeouts in his first five games after being acquired from the Orioles in a trade for infielder Jonathan Villar and two minor leaguers. Schoop was the American League Player of the Week in his final week with Baltimore.
Right-hander Keone Kela pitched a scoreless inning in each of his first two games for the Pirates. He was acquired in a trade with the Rangers after converting 24 of 25 save opportunities this year.
ST. LOUIS CARDINALS
The Cardinals believed they bolstered their rotation by claiming right-hander Tyson Rossoff waivers from the Padres on Aug. 5.
Ross was 6-9 with a 4.45 ERA in 22 starts.
With ace Carlos Martinez on the disabled list because of a sore shoulder, the Cardinals have been using two inexperienced starters, right-hander John Gant and rookie left-hander Austin Gomber.
Right fielder Dexter Fowler’s bad year got worse Aug. 3 when his foul ball broke his left foot. He will wear a walking boot for one month, and then be re-evaluated. Fowler is hitting .180 in the second year of a five-year, $82.5 million contract.
PLAYER SPOTLIGHT
Christian Yelich, Brewers
The 26-year-old left fielder has been everything Milwaukee had hoped for after trading four prospects to the Marlins for him in January. Yelich was hitting .326 with 17 home runs and 14 stolen bases through 99 games. Yelich, who was selected to the All-Star Game for the first time in his six-year career this season, was the Marlins’ first-round amateur draft pick in 2010.
