WHAT WENT RIGHT AND WHAT WENT WRONG AT JACKSONVILLE

The highs and lows of the Steelers matchup at the Jacksonville Jaguars.
COIN TOSS: Steelers call tails. It's tails. Steelers win the toss and choose to defer. Jacksonville gets the football first.
What Went Right: Chris Boswell slipped on the approach to the opening kickoff, which resulted in a bouncing ball that allowed the Jaguars to begin their opening series at the 31-yard line. After one first down, the Steelers defense held with Blake Bortles’ incomplete pass on third-and-4 forcing a punt that ended up being a touchback.
What Went Wrong: The Steelers went three-and-out on their first series, with Ben Roethlisberger getting stoned for no gain on an attempted quarterback sneak on third-and-1. Jordan’s Berry’s 51-yard punt was fair-caught, and the Jaguars started at their own 20-yard line with 10:14 left in the first quarter.
What Went Right: On third-and-1 on Jacksonville’s second offensive series, Leonard Fournette was out of the game and Blake Bortles was in the shotgun. Vince Williams broke up the pass, and Ryan Switzer fair caught the punt to give the Steelers possession at their own 25-yard line.
What Went Right: The Steelers had to punt again, and with 7:07 left in the first quarter their only first down had been as the result of a penalty, but Jordan Berry’s 48-yard punt was downed by Cam Sutton at the Jaguars 6-yard line.
What Went Wrong: Even though the 64-yard drive netted Jacksonville just a 48-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead with 13:10 left in the second quarter, the Jaguars showed they could run the ball at will in the Steelers defense. Starting at their own 6-yard line, the Jaguars ran the ball on 12 straight plays to move it to the Steelers 31-yard line as the first quarter ended.
What Went Wrong: On the possession following the Jacksonville field goal, the Steelers offense went three-and-out, with Ben Roethlisberger throwing two incomplete passes and James Conner losing 1 yard on a second-down run. Jordan Berry’s 55-yard punt was returned 23 yards by Dede Westbrook and the Jaguars began on their own 42-yard line with 12:02 left in the second quarter.
What Went Wrong: With 8:34 left in the first half, the Jaguars had a 6-0 lead after Josh Lambo’s 38-yard field goal, and to that point in the game Jacksonville had rushed for 116 yards on 21 attempts (5.5 average).
What Went Wrong: On the first play following the ensuing kickoff, Ben Roethlisberger tried to get the ball to Antonio Brown over the middle, but Jalen Ramsey under-cut the route and intercepted the ball at the Steelers 47-yard line with 8:23 left in the first half.
What Went Wrong: A nine-play, 22-yard drive following the Jalen Ramsey interception ended with a 43-yard field goal by Josh Lambo that extended the Jaguars lead to 9-0 with 3:37 left in the first half. A sack of Blake Bortles by Javon Hargrave forced the field goal.
What Went Wrong: With 1:16 left in the first half and no timeouts, the Steelers got the ball after a Jaguars punt, but on the first play, Ben Roethlisberger’s throw for Antonio Brown was overthrown and intercepted by Barry Church at the Jacksonville 48-yard line.
What Went Wrong: Some sobering halftime statistics – Ben Roethlisberger completed 8-for-19 for 53 yards, with no touchdowns, two interceptions, and a rating of 10.1; James Conner had 13 yards rushing on five attempts; the Steelers were 1-for 6 on third downs; Leonard Fournette had 74 yards on 14 carries, and the Jaguars had 141 yards on 26 attempts (5.4 average).
HALFTIME: Jaguars 9, Steelers 0
What Went Wrong: Picking up right where they left off, the Steelers offense took the second half kickoff and went three-and-out. After Jordan Berry’s punt, the Jaguars began their first series of the second half at their 26-yard line.
What Went Right: The Steelers defense matched the Jaguars’. On a third-and-short, Jacksonville was penalized for holding, and then on the next play, T.J. Watt sacked Blake Bortles back to the Jacksonville 13-yard line. After a 48-yard punt, the Steelers began at their own 45-yard line.
What Went Wrong: Aided by two 15-yard penalties, one for roughing the passer on Calais Campbell and the other for unnecessary roughness on Telvin Smith, the Steelers moved to the Jacksonville 11-yard line. Ben Roethlisberger tried to force the ball to Antonio Brown, and it turned into his third interception of the afternoon and the second for Jalen Ramsey. There was 7:59 remaining in the third quarter.
What Went Right: An 80-yard drive capped by a 2-yard dive by Leonard Fournette that followed Jalen Ramsey’s second interception upped the Jacksonville lead to 16-0 with 2:09 remaining in the third period. The Jaguars converted two third downs on the drive – a 10-yard pass to D.J. Chark on a third-and-7, and then a 10-yard scramble by Blake Bortles on a third-and-3 that was made possibleThe highs and lows of the Steelers matchup at the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Chark on a third-and-7, and then a 10-yard scramble by Blake Bortles on a third-and-3 that was made possible by Javon Hargrave whiffing on a sack.
What Went Right: On what appeared to be a broken play, Antonio Brown got deep on the Jaguars secondary and caught a pass from Ben Roethlisberger at the Jacksonville 35-yard line and turned the play into a 78-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown that cut their deficit to 16-6. The two-point conversion attempt failed when Roethlisberger’s pass was batted at the line of scrimmage by Calais Campbell. There was just more than one minute left in the third quarter.
What Went Wrong: Facing a fourth-and-6 from the Jaguars 43-yard line and trailing 16-6 with just under seven minutes remaining in the game, Ben Roethlisberger’s pass was dropped by James Conner, who looked to be beyond the yard to gain.
What Went Right: Ben Roethlisberger completed 7-of-8 passes for 65 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown to Vance McDonald to cut the deficit to 16-13 with 2:28 remaining in the game. The Steelers eschewed the onside kick, and the Jaguars began at their 25-yard line with 2:23 left, and the Steelers had all three timeouts and the two-minute warning to stop the clock.
What Went Right: After a miserable game, Ben Roethlisberger took the Steelers down the field and then scored the game-winning touchdown with 5 seconds left when he dove across the goal line on what was a broken play. The big plays on the drive were a 35-yard completion to JuJu Smith-Schuster and a 254-yard completion to Antonio Brown. The Steelers led, 20-16.
FINAL SCORE: Steelers 20, Jaguars 16
