As the Pittsburgh Pirates continue to surge in the
standings, the driving force behind the push has been outfielder Starling
Marte. All of it was put in jeopardy on Wednesday when Marte left the game
after he took a fastball to the hand.
Fortunately, Pittsburgh received great news after the game.
Test results revealed Marte suffered only a contusion on his left hand, which
should help keep his absence to a minimum.
It’s a huge boost for Pittsburgh and even more important for
Marte. In July, he slashed .385/.408/.726 with a 1.134 OPS, seven home runs,
seven stolen bases and 20 RBI in 73 at-bats.
Marte should now avoid a trip to the disabled list and for
now is considered day-to-day. The Pirates are still within striking distance
for the NL Central, so Marte’s return will be welcomed when it happens.
