Starling Marte finished 2-for-5 with a home run and three
RBIs, and the Pittsburgh Pirates won their 11th game in a row with a 9-4
victory over the host Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night at Progressive Field.
The 11-game winning streak represents Pittsburgh's
longest run since Sept. 12-22, 1996. The Pirates have won 13 of 14 games, with
their most recent loss coming a week before the All-Star Game.
Marte pushed his hitting streak to 17 games, which is a
career high and the longest active streak in the majors. The only players with
longer streaks this season are Cleveland's Michael Brantley (19) and Tampa
Bay's Wilson Ramos (18).
Edwin Encarnacion went 2-for-3 with a solo homer to lead
the Indians at the plate. Cleveland has lost three in a row.
Pirates right-hander Joe Musgrove (4-4) earned his first
victory since June 29. He held the Indians to two runs on five hits in seven
innings, walking one and striking out two.
Indians right-hander Shane Bieber (5-2) suffered the
worst outing of his rookie campaign. He gave up seven runs on seven hits in 1
2/3 innings, which caused his ERA to balloon from 3.53 to 4.80.
Pittsburgh opened the scoring with two runs in the first.
Corey Dickerson led off the game with a double, and Marte followed with a
two-run shot to left field for his 16th homer.
The Indians halved the deficit in the bottom of the
first. Francisco Lindor doubled to right field to lead off the inning, advanced
to third on a sacrifice bunt by Brantley and scored on a groundout by Jose
Ramirez.
The Pirates added five runs in the second to pull ahead
7-1. Dickerson drove in two runs with a two-out triple to center field, and
scored moments later on an infield single by Marte. Gregory Polanco capped the
big inning with a two-run shot, his 18th.
Encarnacion led off the fourth with his 23rd home run to
make it 7-2. The 35-year-old slugger moved past Gil Hodges for No. 78 on the
all-time list with his 371st career blast. His next targets are Rocky Colavito
(374) and Carlton Fisk (376).
Josh Bell hit a two-run homer in the fifth for
Pittsburgh.
Indians outfielder Brandon Guyer hit a solo shot in the
eighth. Erik Gonzalez added an RBI double in the ninth.
