LIGHTNING STAY HOT,
EDGE KNIGHTS
LIGHTNING 3, GOLDEN KNIGHTS 2
Brayden Point scored his team-leading sixth goal to spoil
Nevada Day as the Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 3-2 on
Friday afternoon in Las Vegas.
Tyler Johnson and J.T. Miller scored for the Lightning, who
are 7-1-1 to start the season and beat the Golden Knights for the first time in
team history. Tampa Bay's Andrei Vasilevskiy made 29 saves.
Nikita Kucherov's assist on Point's tally gave him a
seven-game point streak, the second-longest in the league behind Sebastian
Aho's 10 for Carolina.
Vegas' Shea Theodore and William Karlsson had goals -- the
latter on a power play -- and Marc-Andre Fleury recorded 20 saves. Left winger
Max Pacioretty, a key offseason acquisition from Montreal, was injured in the
first period and skated only two shifts for the Golden Knights.
AVALANCHE 6, SENATORS 3
Nathan MacKinnon and Gabriel Landeskog scored in a
three-goal barrage to start the third period, and Colorado rallied to beat
Ottawa at Denver.
MacKinnon and Landeskog each added two assists, Mikko
Rantanen had a goal and three assists and Samuel Girard, Carl Soderberg and
Matt Nieto also scored for the Avalanche, who spoiled the return of former
teammate Matt Duchene. Philipp Grubauer stopped 21 shots in his first home
start for Colorado.
Duchene had two goals to help Ottawa take a 3-2 lead after
the second period, but Colorado came storming back in the third. Craig
Anderson, also a former Avalanche player, had 31 saves.
HURRICANES 4, SHARKS 3 (SO)
Brock McGinn provided the only goal in the shootout as
Carolina, which trailed twice by two goals, defeated San Jose at Raleigh, N.C.
Dougie Hamilton and McGinn both scored their first goals of
the season for the Hurricanes in regulation. Teuvo Teravainen added the tying
goal in the second period, with Sebastian Aho assisting to extend his point
streak to 10 games. Carolina goalie Petr Mrazek was credited with 20 stops.
Antti Suomela, Timo Meier and Tomas Hertl scored in
regulation for the Sharks, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. Brent
Burns had two assists. Goalie Aaron Dell made 38 saves for the Sharks.
JETS 2, RED WINGS 1
Dustin Byfuglien scored the game-winner with 6:45 remaining
as visiting Winnipeg edged struggling Detroit.
Byfuglien scored his second goal of the season when he
skated in along the right side and beat Detroit goaltender Jimmy Howard (38
saves) with a shot that glanced off Howard's glove and fluttered just under the
crossbar. Kyle Connor had the other Jets' goal, and Andreas Athanasiou scored
Detroit's lone tally. Laurent Brossoit made 27 saves for Winnipeg.
