THREE HARD LAPS: QUICK HITS FROM TUESDAY
* Penguins captain Sidney Crosby collected multiple points
for a fifth consecutive game to eclipse 1,200 in his NHL career.
* Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov tied the single-season
franchise record for points as he pursues the Art Ross Trophy.
* Islanders head coach Barry Trotz became the fourth member
of the League’s 800-win club.
CROSBY ECLIPSES 1,200-POINT MILESTONE IN OVERTIME WIN
Sidney Crosby (1-2—3) factored on all three Pittsburgh goals
to eclipse 1,200 career regular season points (441-761—1,202 in 927 GP) and
help the Penguins defeat the Panthers in overtime. He became the 48th player in
League history to record 1,200 career regular-season points and just the second
active NHL player to reach the milestone, joining Sharks forward Joe Thornton
(410-1,055—1,465 in 1,550 GP).
* Crosby became the second player in franchise history to
record 1,200 career regular-season points with Pittsburgh, joining Mario
Lemieux (690-1,033—1,723 in 915 GP). The Penguins became the fourth franchise
in NHL history and first non-Original Six club to feature multiple 1,200-point
getters, joining the Red Wings (Gordie Howe, Steve Yzerman and Alex Delvecchio),
Bruins (Ray Bourque and Johnny Bucyk) and Canadiens (Guy Lafleur and N Jean
Beliveau).
* Of the 48 players in NHL history to record 1,200 career
regular-season points, Crosby required the 11th-fewest games to reach the
milestone (927 GP).
KUCHEROV TIES FRANCHISE RECORD AS LIGHTNING EXTEND HOME WIN STREAK
Nikita Kucherov assisted on two of five Tampa Bay goals to
help the League-leading Lightning (51-12-4, 106 points) improve to 8-0-0 in
their last eight home games dating to Feb. 9. Kucherov leads the NHL with 108
points in 2018-19 (31-77—108 in 67 GP) and tied the franchise record for most
in a season, a mark set by Vincent Lecavalier in 2006-07 (52-56—108 in 82 GP).
* The Lightning scored five or more goals in a game for the
28th time in 2018-19 (including shootout-deciding goals). The last season to
feature a team scoring at least five goals in more than 28 games was 1995-96,
when Pittsburgh (41x), Colorado (31x) and Detroit (30x) each did so.
* Andrei Vasilevskiy (30 saves) improved to 10-0-0 in his
last 10 appearances dating to Feb. 9 (1.76 GAA, .943 SV%, 2 SO) and moved
within one game of matching the franchise record for longest win streak by a
Lightning goaltender, a mark set by Louis Domingue from Nov. 29, 2018 – Feb.
19, 2019 (11-0-0). Tampa Bay became the first team in NHL history to feature
multiple goaltenders each with a win streak of at least 10 games in a season.
TROTZ REACHES 800-WIN MILESTONE
Jordan Eberle scored the decisive goal in the shootout as
head coach Barry Trotz earned the 800th regular-season win of his NHL career
and the Islanders (38-21-7, 83 points) reclaimed first place in the
Metropolitan Division standings.
BRUINS EXTEND OVERALL POINT, HOME WIN STREAKS
David Krejci (1-1—2) scored at 1:46 of overtime as the
Bruins improved to 13-0-4 in their last 17 contests dating to Jan. 29 and 8-0-0
in their last eight home games dating to Feb. 5. Boston moved to 40-17-9 (89
points) overall this season and occupies second place in the Atlantic Division
standings, three points up on Toronto (41-21-4, 86 points).
* The Bruins, who have not suffered a regulation loss since
Jan. 19 (3-2 L vs. NYR), earned at least one point in 17 or more consecutive
games for the seventh time in franchise history and second in as many seasons
(also 14-0-4 from Dec. 16, 2017 – Jan. 25, 2018). The longest such run in
franchise history is 23 games, a mark set from Dec. 22, 1940 – Feb. 23, 1941
(15-0-8).
* Brad Marchand assisted on a shorthanded goal by Patrice
Bergeron and has collected 38 career shorthanded points in the regular season
(25-13—38), trailing only Penguins forward Matt Cullen (21-18—39) for the most
among active NHL players. Cullen, who reached the 1,500-game milestone on
Tuesday, has skated in 833 more contests than Marchand.
* Marchand (9-15—24 in 13 GP) and Bergeron (7-11—18 in 13
GP) have both collected at least one point in each of the Bruins’ last 13 home
games dating to Jan. 14. Bergeron was the last Bruins player to record at least
one point in 13 or more consecutive home games, doing so from Nov. 2 – Dec. 23,
2006 (7-12—19 in 15 GP) and again from Oct. 10 – Dec. 16, 2015 (5-13—18 in 15
GP).
PRICE TIES PLANTE FOR MOST WINS IN CANADIENS HISTORY
Canadiens goaltender Carey Price made 26 saves to earn the
314th regular-season win of his NHL career (all w/ MTL) and tie Jacques Plante
for the most in franchise history.
* Price can become the fifth goaltender to conclude a season
as the Canadiens’ all-time wins leader. He would join Plante (1959-60 to
2017-18), Bill Durnan (1948-49 to 1958-59), George Hainsworth (1930-31 to
1947-48) and Georges Vezina (1917-18 to 1929-30).
QUICK CLICKS
* GMs approve concepts for rule changes regarding player
safety, offense
* Predators reclaim first place in Central Division
standings
* Ducks forward Ryan Kesler reaches 1,000-game milestone
* Alex Ovechkin has eyes on another 50-goal season for
Capitals
SNEAK PEEK AT WEDNESDAY’S ACTION
FLEURY CAN EXTEND SHUTOUT STREAK AS GOLDEN KNIGHTS HOST FLAMES
Marc-Andre Fleury can earn his third consecutive shutout
when the Golden Knights (36-26-5, 77 points) host the Western
Conference-leading Flames (41-18-7, 89 points) at T-Mobile Arena. He has not
allowed a goal since Roope Hintz tallied for the Stars at 11:13 of the first
period on Feb. 26, a personal shutout streak of 168:47.
* Fleury has recorded 436 career regular-season wins and
sits one shy of tying Jacques Plante (437) for eighth place on the League’s
all-time list. Five of the nine winningest goaltenders in NHL history are
Quebec-born, including Roberto Luongo who earned his 485th career regular
season victory on Feb. 25 to pass Ed Belfour (484) for sole possession of third
place in League history.
* Fleury leads the League with eight shutouts in 2018-19 and
is two shy of matching his career high for most in a season, a mark he set in
2014-15 (10). Fleury (born Nov. 28, 1984) can become the seventh different
goaltender in NHL history to record 10 or more shutouts in a season at age 34
or older and first since Martin Brodeur in 2006-07 (12).
